That’s why today I want to explain how to convert AIFF to MP3 , using some free applications that allow you to process these files and reduce their weight considerably, without catastrophic upheavals on sound quality.
Let me be clear: some compromises on audio cleanliness must necessarily be accepted, but I assure you that, thanks to the indications I am about to give you, you will succeed in the enterprise without too many regrets. So? Ready to start? Yup? Great! Let’s ban the chatter and proceed!
How to convert AIFF to MP3
Are you interested in understanding how to convert AIFF to MP3 from your computer, using programs dedicated to the purpose? Then I suggest you consider the software that you find listed below: there are both for Windows and for macOS and Linux , and they are all very easy to use. Try them now!
The first application that I suggest you use to perform the operation covered by this tutorial is called Fre:ac . It’s free, open source and combines a very easy-to-use user interface with advanced features that allow you to convert all the main audio file formats between them. It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.
To download Fre:ac on your PC, connect to the program’s website and click on the Downloads link in the sidebar on the left, then select the Self-extracting installer: freac-xxxx.exe link (if you’re using Windows) or the Binary one. dmg image: freac-xx-alpha-xxxxxxxxx-macosx.dmg (if you are using macOS).
When the download is complete, if you are using Windows, open the .exe file obtained and, in the window that appears on the desktop, press the Yes and Next buttons, then click again on the Yes button , then on the Next button (four times in a row ) and completes the setup by pressing the Finish button. After that, launch the program by double-clicking the shortcut that has been added to your desktop.
If you’re using macOS , open the downloaded .dmg package and drag the Fre:ac icon (the one with the program logo ) to your computer’s Applications folder . Then right-click on it and choose the Open item from the menu that appears, in order to go around the limitations imposed by Apple on applications from non-certified developers (an operation that must be performed only on first start).
Once the Fre:ac main window is displayed, drag the AIFF songs to convert onto it, or add them “manually” by clicking on the button with the white sheet and the [+] symbol located in the upper left.
Therefore, indicate the folder in which to save the songs after conversion, by clicking on the Browse button located at the bottom right, and start the transformation of the files, by pressing the arrow located next to the green play button and selecting the Lame MP3 encoder item present in the menu that opens.
If you want to adjust the quality level of the MP3 files to be obtained, click on the wrench icon at the top, select the Lame MP3 Encoder item from the drop-down menu in the Encoders tab (in the window that opens) and press the Set button . I recommend: touch these settings only if you know where you’re putting your hands (in any case, know that, for the bitrate, 192kbps is the minimum threshold for obtaining good quality audio, 320kbps the ideal choice if you don’t want to accept too many compromises ).
It is practically impossible not to mention iTunes when it comes to converting AIFF to MP3, considering that the former is a format developed by Apple and that the software in question, totally free, is the default player for “bitten apple” computers , as well as the tool to manage iPhone, iPad and iPod. iTunes comes standard with macOS and is available as a free download on Windows.
To use it, if you’re using a Mac , start it by clicking on its icon (the one with the white background and the multicolored musical note ) present in the Launchpad . If, on the other hand, you are using Windows , you must first download the program and follow the relative setup procedure.
If you use Windows 10 , access the relevant section of the Microsoft Store and press the Get and Open buttons . If you are using Windows 8.1 or a previous version of the Microsoft operating system , instead, go to the Apple website, click on the 64-bit Download button (or select the Download the app from here link if you are using 32-bit Windows) and proceed with the installation, as I explained in detail in my guide on how to install iTunes.
Once the iTunes window appears on the screen, click on the Preferences item in the iTunes menu (on macOS) or in the Edit menu (on Windows), at the top left. In the further window that opens on the screen, click on the Import settings button found in the General tab , select MP3 encoder from the Import using drop-down menu and adjust, if you want, the audio quality of the output file using the adjacent menu (I recommend always 192kbps or 320kbps ). Finally, confirm the changes made by pressing the OK button per due volte consecutive.
Now, if the AIFF songs to be converted are already present in the iTunes library, you can go directly to reading the next paragraph. Otherwise, go to the Music section of the app by selecting the latter from the drop-down menu at the top right, select the Library item at the top, the Songs item on the left and drag the audio files into the program window.
Now you have to select all the songs of your interest, holding down the cmd key (on macOS) or Ctrl (on Windows) and clicking on it with the mouse, then you have to press on the File menu , located at the top left, and select the items Convert and Create MP3 version from the latter.
Then wait for the conversion procedure to complete, then select the songs converted to MP3 and, very simply, drag them out of the iTunes window, dropping them in the location where you want to save them.
If in the iTunes library you can no longer distinguish MP3 songs from those in AIFF format, because they have the same name, I inform you that you can easily remedy this by consulting the file properties: to do so, right click on each song, select the item Song information from the context menu and go to the File tab of the new window that appears: you can get the information you need from there.
