Just a little warning before we begin: go to your computer’s “Music” folder and create a backup copy of the “iTunes” folder (or simply copy it to another location): this is the path where Apple’s multimedia software it keeps all the songs and videos in its library. It shouldn’t be deleted following the removal of iTunes but, you know, caution is never too much!

As just mentioned, removing the version of iTunes available on the Microsoft Store of Windows 10 is disarmingly simple.

If you have downloaded this variant of the Apple software but, being unfamiliar with technology, you don’t know how to proceed, do this: click on the Start button (the flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen ) and access the system settings panel by selecting the gear icon located on the left side of the menu that has opened.

In the window that is now being offered to you, go to Apps , select iTunes from the list of programs installed on the PC and press the Uninstall button twice in order to remove the software from the PC. Easier than that?

If you want to uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it, in order to solve any problems you are having in using the program, instead of uninstalling it, you can also try to restore it: to do this, select the program from the Settings > Windows 10 Apps section and click on the Advanced Options item that appears under its name.

Scroll, therefore, the next screen and click on the Restore button , to try to restore iTunes without uninstalling it. If not successful, try the Reset button , which returns the application to the initial settings (but without deleting the data). Both of these operations are feasible only with the version of iTunes downloaded from the Microsoft Store.

Alternatively, if you’re using  Windows 10 , but you’ve downloaded the “classic” version of iTunes from Apple’s website, you have to proceed a little differently.

After going to the Windows Settings panel (the gear icon located on the left of the Start menu), go to  Apps , select  iTunes and first click on the  Uninstall button twice consecutively and then on Yes .

Therefore, wait for the completion bar to reach 100% and also proceed with the removal of other software installed with the standard version of iTunes, such as Apple Software Update , Apple Mobile Device Support , Apple Application Support and Bonjour .

The steps you need to take are practically the same as those I indicated above for iTunes: select the program to remove, click the Uninstall button twice in succession and then follow the on-screen instructions.

How to uninstall iTunes

To uninstall iTunes from Windows 8.x or earlier , you must go to the Control Panel of the operating system and click on the item Uninstall a program located at the bottom left.

In the window that opens, then select the item related to iTunes , click on the Uninstall button located at the top and complete the procedure by clicking on Yes , twice in succession. Now you need to remove the other software that Apple installs on your PC along with its multimedia program. Carefully follow the order I am about to suggest.

The first “accessory” software you need to delete is Apple Software Update , the utility that downloads updates for all Apple software installed on your computer. If you use the iCloud client or other applications of the Cupertino giant DO NOT uninstall it, otherwise select its name from the control panel, click on the Uninstall button and complete the cancellation procedure by pressing Yes , twice in succession.

The second software you need to uninstall is Apple Mobile Device Support , then select its name from the Windows control panel, click on the Uninstall button and start its removal by pressing Yes , twice in succession.

After that it’s up to Bonjour . To remove it from your PC, follow the usual procedure: select its name from the control panel, press Uninstall and click Yes , twice in succession.

Finally you should “get rid” of Apple Application Support , another component that can also be used by iCloud and other Apple-branded programs. Only delete it if you don’t use other software released by the bitten apple company. The procedure you have to follow is always the same: select the name of the software ( Apple Application Support (32-bit) or Apple Application Support (64-bit) ) and click on Uninstall / Yes .

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\CoreFP
  • C:\Program Files\iTunes
  • C:\Program Files\iPod

Mission accomplished! Now you can continue living your computing life without iTunes. Or, if you want, you can reinstall the program following the standard procedure, i.e. downloading it from the Apple website and opening the .exe package that contains it, as I explained to you in my dedicated tutorial.

How to uninstall iTunes

iTunes is an integral part of macOS , the operating system on Macs, but it can actually be removed from there as well. Just rely on the good old Terminal.

However, an important clarification must be made: in macOS 10.14 Mojave , Apple has decided to make iTunes even more integrated into the system, not offering the possibility of reinstalling it in the form of a dmg package (in macOS 10.15 Catalina it was then abandoned in favor of the new Music application ).

In other words, this means that if you use macOS 10.14 or later and uninstall iTunes following the directions below, you may make your system unstable, get boot errors, and other problems for which I take no responsibility. responsibility . Furthermore, to reinstall the program you should reinstall the operating system via Recovery (or possibly restore a Time Machine backup, risking however to find yourself with the same problems that are leading you to remove the software). If, on the other hand, you use a previous version of macOS, you can reinstall iTunes by simply downloading the relative dmg package from the Apple website. Clear? Well then, let’s continue.

At the end of the procedure, remember to restart macOS again in recovery mode and re-enable the SIP, using this Terminal command:  csrutil enable; reboot .

If you don’t want to permanently delete iTunes but just remove it and then reinstall it on your Mac, reinstall macOS using the appropriate function available in recovery mode (if you use macOS Mojave) or download the program again from Apple’s official website ( if you’re using a version of macOS earlier than 10.14).

When the download is complete, open the dmg package that you downloaded from the Cupertino giant’s website and start the Install iTunes executable contained within it. At this point, first click on Continue , twice consecutively and then on Install , enter the MacOS administration password and complete the setup by pressing Install software .

Attention: the procedure just seen together is not officially documented by Apple. Possible malfunctions of the system following its application cannot be excluded. I have personally tested it and everything went smoothly, but it is my duty to warn you before proceeding and tell you that I do not take responsibility for any problems you may encounter on your Mac following its implementation. In any case, make a good backup with Time Machine before proceeding!
