Windows 7 stopped receiving updates in January 2020, that is, it may already be vulnerable to security threats, which can compromise user services and data. To this end, Microsoft has provided a free tool to upgrade Windows 7 to 10 at no additional cost. Still working, it also allows users of version 8.1 of the operating system to upgrade.
It is worth remembering that the procedure works for those who have original copies of Windows 7 and 8.1.
How to upgrade Windows 7 to 10
- Go to the Windows 10 download page: microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10;
- Click on “Download the tool now”;
- Select the option “Update this PC now” and click “Next”;
- Follow the instructions and wait for the installation to finish;
- Finally, go to “Settings > Update & Security > Activation“ and check that Windows “is activated with a digital license”.
What version of Windows 10 will it be updated to?
If you have Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium or Windows 8.1, you will get Windows 10 Home. In case of Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Windows 8.1 Pro, you will get Windows 10 Pro. In some cases, installation will be blocked if there are known compatibility issues with drivers or programs already installed on your PC.
After the upgrade, you will have a digital license associated with the PC. You can then format the disk and perform a clean install of the same edition of Windows 10 at any time; in this case, activation is automatic.
Microsoft does not release free update
The free upgrade to Windows 10 should have ended in July 2016. Microsoft gave a deadline extension for users of adaptive technologies, who could download the system for free until the end of 2017 — however, this was open to everyone , as there was no verification.
Why is this still working? Ed Bott of ZDnet, who has more than a decade of Windows licensing experience, suspects Microsoft has put a time limit on free Windows 10 so as not to irritate OEM partners whose business model depends on selling new PCs.
Microsoft doesn’t even sell specific upgrade licenses for those who have previous versions, like 7 or 8.1, only licenses to install the system from scratch. Marketing is focused on new Windows PCs for consumers, and Windows 10 Enterprise and Microsoft 365 subscriptions for businesses.
